The
Popular Selection List,
2009 Edition is an
addendum to The Royal Conservatory of Music’s
Piano
Syllabus,
2001 &
2007 Edition, which
embodies the official requirements for the piano examinations
conducted by RCM Examinations. This Popular Selection List, 2009
Edition replaces all
editions previously published by The Frederick Harris Music
Co., Limited.
The Popular
Selection List is a
compilation of non-classical pieces, carefully selected to suit
each grade level. Candidates in Grades 3 to 9 have the option
of substituting a piece chosen from the
Popular Selection
List for one study
in their grade. Candidates should consult the
Piano Syllabus, 2001
Edition for
detailed information on substitution policies.
Candidates do not need prior approval from RCM
Examinations to use a piece from the Popular Selection List
for replacing one of the studies for
the same grade. In order to maintain the integrity of the
historical survey aspect of the examination, repertoire
selections may not be substituted with works from the
Popular Selection
List. Each piece has
musical value, containing rhythmic or technical challenges
pertinent to the grade level for which it has been selected.
The edition to be used is clearly identified to ensure the
appropriate arrangement for each grade. Candidates must use the
specified edition; different editions of the same work will not
be accepted.
